I gather a correct vocabulary is useful while fossicking, and is an important part of the technique. I, for one, included a number of four letter words that I don't normally use at various times.

For an actual list of REAL words of relevance to fossicking, check out the list on Walda Scholler's website:

Some fascinating stuff, with clues to things I never new existed, such as a "Pharaoh's Eye". I gotta see me one of those!

Hi Dom!

Very cool... Is it something you found? In Retreat Creek?

And thanks again for the Roman coin you gave the kids... They thought that was fabulous. Of course, I was the biggest kid in the tent, so I thought it was extra fabulous.

It was a real pleasure to offer a piece of history from the old world:)
No I did not find it in the creek,a man (stan)that I met showed it to me,he had it made as a pendant.
Just a pity I could not get a better picture, the sun was very low when I took the picture.
We did buy the poor man's willoughby, that you advised us to do.It did a great job, thanks
As for me in 22 days digging in Retreat Creek,I found 1255 carats of stones, more than half not cutters. In the good stones some 3/4 carats sapphires and a lot of small stuff.
Retreat Creek stoped to flow more or less the day I left.
Thank you again for the sapphire you offered me and the evening that I spend with your family.
Keep well:)

Sounds like you found enough to make it interesting. As I tell people who ask me... "it seems that sapphires are hard to find."

We also found quite a bit of small stuff, and a few larger stones as well (nothing you'd break your foot on if you kicked it, though).

I gather from talking to people Retreat Creek very often doesn't have water in it, so it worked out well for you. You must have used up the last of the water in the creek! 😉
